1.2 Course description

This course examines the legal, regulatory, tax, and practical dimensions of wealth management, with a particular focus on Hong Kong’s role as a wealth management and family office hub. It introduces students to the legal structures commonly used in private wealth planning, including trusts, offshore vehicles, family offices, companies, partnerships, foundations, and other holding arrangements. The course also considers mental capacity planning, tax issues, regulatory concerns, wealth disputes, family governance, and family advisory practice.

The course combines doctrinal analysis with practical and policy-oriented discussion. Students will be encouraged to consider how legal tools are used to preserve, transfer, protect, and deploy family wealth, and how lawyers, trustees, family office professionals, tax advisers, regulators, and family advisers interact in the wealth management ecosystem.
